Teaching and learning theory empowers us all to take responsibility for how we use and articulate the material we’re working with. Theory invites a teacher to teach from her or his humanity and a student to measure what they’re being taught against their own. In this way, theory functions as a conduit between students and teachers, a conduit that connects us through the currency of ideas, images, critical thinking and metaphor and challenges us to toil with and articulate our personal processes while measuring them against universal archetypes and ideas. Theory is the magical ingredient that enhances the flavor of a classroom. It turns a bland sequence into a spicy hero's journey by making the focus of the practice less about getting from point A to point B, and more about exploring the power and freedom that exists in the space between.
A potentiated classroom is where teachers and students come together to participate in delicious self-actualization.
In this three part series, we will navigate the nuances of teaching and learning through the practical wisdom of Katonah Yoga. Each week we will touch upon a unique strand of the material and ask questions that aid in our capacity to understand which facets of the theory feel true to us, and why.
SEQUENCING, METAPHOR + WHAT THAT MEANS TO ME? (Friday March 25th)
In this session we will explore sequences through the ways in which we use theory as a technique to keep us in the moment. Is there a Katonah Yoga Sequence? Why do we crave sequences and what do they really give us? How does metaphor enhance embodiment? Do these metaphors make sense? And can I come up with my own?
STORY TELLING + PRACTICE TEACHING (Friday April 22nd)
In this session students will be prompted to tell a story to the group. Then we will split into breakout rooms to do an exercise in Listening, finishing with a quick breakout room practice teaching assignment.
STUDENT TEACHER DYNAMICS (Friday May 20th)
In this session we will engage in a group discussion exploring how we are as learners, which informs how we are as teachers (& vice-versa) and the dynamics that may come up there.
