Price: $100

All hours bankable toward your Katonah Yoga® Certification.

The Katonah practice is rich with universal metaphors and big ideas to chew on. The theory lends itself to an exploration of both the personal and global perspectives that give our life meaning. As we move through time, both in our daily doings and for the long haul, we can observe a myriad of references that are mirrored in our practice, especially when we know what to look for. From mythology, to science fiction, to psychology, to number theory, our material is woven through our lived experience.

Join us for an exploration of the Katonah Yoga theory as seen through the cultural references, literary icons and self development techniques that shape and direct our lives.

MYTHOLOGY - THE NARRATIVE THREAD (Thursday August 4th) with Abbie Galvin
A thread of an idea, a well-woven narrative, is a universal story that becomes a metaphor for losing oneself and finding oneself. In this session we will look at the idea of the narrative thread through stories of finding ourselves, so that we are not “easy prey” to life’s curveballs. The myth of Ariadne is the unweaving and weaving of a string ball that elicits a pathway out of a maze, or the Three Sisters that determine one’s destiny. The word thread is also one of the meanings of the word “sutra” which we use to refer to the imagination. These stories are about finding ourselves out of a dilemma, a catastrophe and ultimately out of our unconscious.

SCIENCE FICTION - THE HERO’S JOURNEY (Thursday August 11th) with Kyle Henry
One of science fiction's main tenets is the manipulation of time through the Hero’s Journey. Star Wars, Dune, 1984, The Time Machine by HG Wells all show us that when time becomes variable, everything is up for grabs. A hero’s journey is a pattern of storytelling that summons all of us into ourselves, into our creative imagination, in order to embark on some call to adventure and return… transformed. In this session we will look at how science fiction gives us a metaphorical way to explore the known and the unknown world, how to mirror ourselves through time in order to find a new angle or purview of our circumstances, and ultimately, how to handle the present.

PSYCHOANALYSIS + PHILOSOPHY - THE SAGE’S JOURNEY (Thursday August 18th) with Abbie Galvin
The Sage’s Journey is an exploration into the techniques of self-inquiry. In this session, we will explore writings from Freud, Alan Watts, L. Frank Baum and start to understand how any sage's journey is the undertaking of meeting oneself through self-inquiry; morning pages, meditation, home practice. The concept of “wu wei” or “flow state,” the sense of fluidity between body and mind where you are one with the task at hand, beyond distraction, the syncing up of awareness and action to create effortless momentum and the manipulation of time by being in the present moment.

UNIVERSALITY OF NUMBERS (Thursday August 25th) with Abbie Galvin
Each number, from 1 through 9, has a story or myth associated with it. The trinity of the Fates, number 3, as the beginning, middle and end of someone’s destiny, seven, a prime number, is the story of Athena as a product fully formed, ready for battle, A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf as the exploration of 5. In this session we will move through each number giving it a concept and story in order to open up each of our squares, in the Magic Square, so that each one becomes a fractal of life: with its own references and associations.
