Teaching yoga is a different endeavor than doing yoga. A Yogi with a nice practice isn't necessarily the best teacher of it. A great skier or dancer doesn't guarantee they can teach what it is they can do so well. An inspired musician is often a lousy teacher. Teaching is an art all its own. Doing yoga well demands that one study it over time with a regularity of practice, refining one’s skills. However, teaching it to others demands the ability to be able to articulate theory and to have the capacity to break down the practice verbally so that our students have an embodied, spirited experience. A teacher has to "hold" the room, with a certain psychic connection to each student in their realm; an intuitive alertness which keeps students curious and attentive and which makes everyone feel safe. For the duration of one's class, a teacher is mentor, model, mother, mid-wife, muse, modulator and manipulator, planting seeds for insight and change beyond the mat.

Meeting once a week, over a 3 month period, we will explore the tenants of the Katonah Yoga practice, through the lens of a teacher. Through a series of workshop and discussion sessions we will cover all aspects of the practice including magic square, body reading, adjustment theory, restorative practice, teaching therapeutic privates, sequencing, addressing injuries, pranayama and articulating theory.

MEET THE MENTORS

ABBIE GALVIN

Abbie Galvin is the owner of The Studio, a NYC based yoga studio, teaching Katonah Yoga. She has been honing this practice for the past 25 years and has a strong student base from all around the world. Abbie's instruction is informed by her own creative process as a filmmaker and from her exploration of the therapeutic process as a psychoanalyst. She has learned over and over that truly participating in any formal process of self-exploration leads to transformation whether it be physical, psychological or intellectual. Her goal is to engage students of yoga in the dialogue between their conscious and their unconscious selves because it is through that effort that we potentiate ourselves. It is her intention as a teacher to cajole each student in that most rigorous effort to be grounded, to grow upwards and to participate in the creation of their best self.

ALEX SHARRY

Alex Sharry has been teaching yoga throughout NYC for over 10 years. After studying with Abbie Galvin and Nevine Michaan, Katonah Yoga quickly became her primary practice and teaching. Initially drawn to the practice itself, she tends to focus on the more practical elements of the material, knowing first hand that without them exploring the more magical elements of the theory can feel very daunting. An avid reader, she often uses the experiences of her life outside of yoga as lessons and metaphors to inform her teaching. Her goal as a teacher is to make the practice feel approachable to everyone, while encouraging her students to get curious about their own humanity. Constantly striving to measure teaching against that of our greatest educators, she seeks to create an empowered community of individuals, who are constantly challenging themselves and each other to be more inclusive and impactful.

CHASE CONNOLLY

Chase Connolly has been practicing yoga since childhood and teaching yoga for over 14 years. Introduced to yoga at age 8 by his grandmother, he started studying it seriously in high school and completed his first teacher training soon after. Practicing everything from Hatha, to Power Yoga to Vinyasa, it wasn’t until he found Katonah Yoga, after injuries and dissatisfaction, that his love for yoga was revived and gained new meaning. Chase’s teaching is informed by his background in anatomy, his study of herbalism and his love of plants and gardening. He strives to utilize the physical practice as a container to embark on the exploration of universal concepts, encouraging each student to create a narrative of self cultivation, turning oneself into a diverse ecosystem of ideas and curiosities to further the exploration of the interior landscape.

KYLE HENRY

Kyle Henry, a longtime musician and vocal coach, began his yoga journey practicing Kundalini yoga, which led him down a path of spiritual inquiry. Upon discovering Katonah Yoga, his entire relationship to yoga shifted, where yoga became a means to connect the physical, emotional and mental aspects of being. After developing a refined practice, he began teaching the Katonah material from a place influenced by his study and practice of Taoism, Chinese Medicine, Tai Chi and meditation. Kyles teaching is informed by his career as a musician and educator and his love of exploring narratives, through stories, books, movies, television, musicals and finding the commonality between them and the experiences of our lives. His goal is to embolden his students to recognize that they can use this practice to step into themselves and acknowledge the agency they have in their own lives.

The Studio mentorship program is very special. The most special part being that it is an extremely intimate and personal small group experience. Having such meaningful and progressive contact with both fellow students and the stellar mentors was invaluable. Take the leap!
— Willis Johnston (Former Mentee)
The Studio’s Mentorship Program was a wonderful and expansive experience. The twelve-week program not only provided a deep dive into the Katonah material, but offered generous community and an openness to pursue topics based on interest and need. Furthermore, the program illuminated how special and transformative the material really is, not only for application to the world of yoga, but life beyond so that you might have a more organized, balanced and capacious planetary experience.

The mentorship provided an optimal learning environment for me. In addition to passionate, highly skilled, and knowledgeable teachers, there is a healthy regard for studentship. The instructors welcome and honor the varied backgrounds and lineages of the participants, enriching the experience and the Katonah material. My entire practice and teaching has been elevated in practical and nuanced ways. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend joining – if anything, to become an even more well-rounded, giving, and joyful human.
— Robin Giacomo (Former Mentee)
I am so grateful to have participated in the mentorship program at The Studio; this program has truly re-inspired my practice and my facilitation. Even in the virtual format, I felt deeply connected to the other mentees in my training group and was so appreciative that Abbie and the rest of the teachers at The Studio were available and supportive throughout the entire process. I especially appreciated the intimate size of the group as it truly allowed me to connect to the Katonah Yoga material in a meaningful way. Having completed the mentorship, I feel curious to continue my Katonah Yoga studies and confident to begin integrating this beautiful material into my teachings. I highly recommend this mentorship!

Signing up for this mentorship program was the best thing I could have done for myself during the pandemic and the shut down of my yoga studio. I loved being able to study with Abbie, Alex and Kyle in a small and intimate group. I really enjoyed the group that I got to work with and we are still in communication now. The classes were challenging and nourishing and I loved dissecting the Katonah material in depth. It’s added so much to my current teachings.
— Karla Treadway (Former Mentee)
The mentorship at The Studio was an intimate experience. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to connect with other Katonah yoga students and teachers. I felt that the program offered a good balance of practice and theory. If you are working on your certification, I highly recommend spending a portion of your hours in this program.

The Studio’s mentorship provided a nurturing container for my growth as a human, student and teacher. The small group environment allowed for incredible dialogue, support and community to take root and flourish. Each mentor brings a different perspective to the material and articulates the material in a unique way, which helped me to more confidently grapple with the esoteric essence of the practice. Make a deal with yourself and take the leap!
— Felicia Guadagni (Former Mentee)
Loved it! Being part of the mentorship really helped re-ignite my passion for the material and gave me the confidence I needed as a teacher. Abbie and the other mentors create a comfortable atmosphere where each individual feels seen and supported, with lots of room for questions, anecdotes, and moments of connection. It’s been a joy to share what I’ve learned and I continue to grow with it in time.
— Rena Lekach (Former Mentee)

The mentorship program gave me an immersive, comprehensive and intimate deep dive into the Katonah Yoga theory. The sessions were delightfully varied and offered a dimensional experience. The mentors made themselves available and taught with honesty and vulnerability. The 3 hour classes and outside study groups were a unique space to connect with people located all around the globe. I feel more embodied and learned in the Katonah Yoga practice and yearn to continue the journey.
