The breath is elemental, primal, instinctive. Breathing is part of our lunar nature, functioning for the most part without our conscious awareness. Our lungs take up whatever space they are given, filling and emptying within the rhythmic pattern determined by our emotional state. And while the unconscious breath is largely directed by ephemeral states of mind, when we instead breathe consciously, using technique over feeling, attention over impulsivity, we can begin to alter the state of our being. Conscious breath techniques train our imagination to create a matrix of purposeful living, clarity of thinking and greater internal peace.

Join us this winter for an exploration of the breath techniques to calm the nervous system and soothe the soul.

THE METAPHOR OF THE BREATH (Thursday January 4th)
with
Abbie Galvin

The way we breathe is the way we live. While this is metaphorical, it is also practical, therefore, in the most hopeful way, we can change it, amend it, improve it and discover ways to use it for our physical health and emotional well being. The mind, the body and the breath are inextricably bound. In this session we will explore the breath as a metaphor for our lives, moving through some classic Katonah pranayama practices.

THE BREATH MAPS (Thursday January 11th)
with
Ty Watson

Metaphor is our most potent tool for engaging the mind and elevating our personal frame of reference into something more universal, but it also becomes how we direct our breath towards unchartered territory, integrating pieces of ourselves that we weren’t aware of, going where we have been before with more consciousness. In this sessions we will explore the many metaphors and maps we associate with the breath… the breath as the melody of a symphony; the breath as the driver of our vehicle; the breath moving through our personal abode to address our health and individual chemistry; the breath as a numeric circuit that mirrors personal achievement.

MAGIC SQUARING THE BREATH (Thursday January 18th)
with
Alex Scerri

The magic square provides us with a template for charting out the terrain of our interior. In this session we will map out and explore the body as our abode, where our spirit lives: a house with three floors, nine rooms and ten doors. After laying out the territory, we will move through various breath techniques to organize our physical and metaphorical house, upping its function and accessing the imagination that lives inside.

BREATH MECHANICS + THE DIAPHRAGM (Thursday January 25th)
with
Matt Phippen

The stability of your pelvis is contingent on the quality of your breath. And the quality of your breath depends on the stability of your core. In this session we will explore proper breath mechanics and pelvic floor mechanics, while emphasizing the way breathing informs the way we move our body.

THE WRAPS FOR RAPTURE (Thursday February 1st)
with
Chelsea Delle Palme

The Wraps for Rapture unravel within and without us the experience of being spherical, rounded out, complete. Using the breath to track the polarity path of the wraps illuminates our imagination, deepens our embodied connection to our environment and harmonizes our breath to help us access a greater sense of balanced well-being. In this session we will build our understanding of these archetypal pathways theoretically, physically and, of course, through the breath.

THE BODY AS A GARDEN (Thursday February 8th)
with
Chase Connolly

How we choose to interact with our bodies is akin to how one might approach a garden. We all start with a unique set of circumstances. The vision of what we want to cultivate must be put into conversation with the quality of our soil and water, whilst understanding the conditions outside of our control, such as sunlight, growing season, and the amount of time we can realistically dedicate to this cultivation. In this session we will overlay the metaphor of the garden upon the glandular system through an anatomical and esoteric framework.

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM (Thursday February 15th)
with
Ty Watson

The nervous system runs through the embodiment like an electrical circuit, automatically working, doing, maintaining the systems of our personal equilibrium. Our breathing is one of those systems and becomes the portal to the more implicit faculties of the parasympathetic nervous system. Using the breath consciously allows us to insulate the wiring so that our nervous system is able to tolerate more currency. This session will zoom out to give us a frame of reference for the nervous system, then zoom in to move through a restorative and breathwork practice that “cools our jets:” lowering the temperature of our nervous system so that it is more available to work with, rewire and insulate.

EXPANDED POTENTIAL (Thursday February 22nd)
with
Ally Bogard

Mary Oliver asked: Listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life? In this session we will work with lung capacity, breath retention and the mind body connection to increase power, radiance and capacity for the life force and vitality of the breath.

KUNDALINI BREATHWORK + KRIYA (Thursday February 29th)
with
Hari Kaur

Kundalini yoga is a vibrant and rhythmic practice of breath, exercise, asana, meditation, mudra and deep relaxation. In this session we will practice and experience the power of kundalini kriya and pranic techniques, the combination of which creates a state of coordinated mind and body that gives access to expanded states of consciousness and vastness, often fairly quickly.

VILOMA BREATHING: AGAINST THE GRAIN (Thursday March 7th)
with
Dages Keates

Viloma breathing interrupts business as usual. An aerobic segmented breath practice that brings immediate changes to the nervous system, viloma can be utilized to travel through and organize subtle body cartographies. In this session we will introduce different techniques for manipulating inner circuitry, while finding space and ease.

THE BODY AS AN ECOSYSTEM (Thursday March 14th)
with
Chase Connolly

The body is a teeming ecotone. An intersection of multiple ecologies pulsating with life, from the bacteria of the microbiome which outnumber our human cells, to the spores and particles we breathe in and exchange with each other every day. It is a porous ever shifting landscape which can be engaged with consciously to increase its capacity to hold subtle energy. Pranayama fine tunes our senses to the information the body shares with us each and every moment. In this session we will explore the body as a complex web of ecosystems through the lens of ecological philosophy, creating fertile soil to situate our imaginative capacity within the wonderment of the body.

CREATING A BREATHWORK PRACTICE (Thursday March 21st)
with
Ty Watson

A breath practice folds your imagination into your embodiment, making pieces of yourself more articulate, fluent and available to have an internal experience. As a home practice, breathwork addresses the facility of your organs and glands, the function of your endocrine system, the atmosphere of your emotional climate, the stability of your nervous system and the integration of yourself. In this session we will discuss the idea of a breathing practice as a therapeutic tool to address your health and equilibrium on a daily basis. We will offer some recipes and archetypal narratives that you might begin to reuse, repeat, refine and reform into your own home practice.

THE BREATH IN THE FORM (Thursday March 28th)
with
Abbie Galvin

As soon as the imagination is in the body, the body vibrates. Putting the breath in the form, in a yoga pose, is the "on" button for our embodiment. In this way we can create an effervescence which alters our chemistry by raising our amplitude. Moving our breath thru a myriad of poses is a way to play with temperature both emotional and physical, find more pliancy, and fill our embodiment with levity, making us "ready" for anything that comes.
